Michael has more than 18 years of experience working at the highest levels of local and state government. Most recently, as the chief deputy to the Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson, Michael was the point person on a host of City Council operational and organizational activities. He also served as the Council President’s liaison to the greater Los Angeles Asian-American community. Michael possesses decades of experience and knowledge working at the highest levels of government on complex citywide, region-wide and statewide legislation, as well as many prominent land use and development projects.
Spending many years as the chief deputy to Council President Herb Wesson, Michael played a leading role in Mr. Wesson’s efforts to revitalize Koreatown. He managed a multi-billion dollar portfolio of projects within the most densely populated district by population in Los Angeles County. He was responsible for spearheading the rehabilitation of Wilshire and Olympic boulevards by installing historical signage, and by implementing landmark infrastructure improvements that brought economic development to the corridors.
Michael also secured funding and land use approvals for the establishment of the Koreatown Senior Citizen and Community Center, located behind the Dawooljong Gazebo on Olympic and Normandie. On the Korean American Museum, Michael pursued an innovative approach that allowed the museum to construct not only the museum facility but also housing (including affordable and market-rate housing) on City-owned property. By utilizing this approach, the museum utilizes the revenue from the on-site housing to fund its on-going operational needs.
In addition to his experience at multiple levels of government, Michael has played a leading role on candidate and initiative campaigns at multiple levels of government. Relying on his extensive relationships and political expertise, Michael helped campaigns build broad, diverse strategic coalitions and raise funds necessary to compete and win.
Michael’s past work experience includes being an Area Director under the Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn administration, Asian American Pacific Islander liaison and special assistant to Assemblymember Herb Wesson during his tenure as the Speaker of the California State Assembly.
